Admission & selectivity

International applicants

~25–40% (est.)

Xiamen University does not publish an acceptance rate for international applicants. Admission is materials-based: applicants aged 18-30 with a valid foreign passport submit a high-school diploma/transcripts and a language certificate.

Chinese-taught programs require HSK (HSK 5 score 210+ for Humanities/Economics/Management/Law/Arts; HSK 4 score 210+ for Sciences/Engineering/Medicine/Physical Education).

English-taught programs, including the 6-year English-medium MBBS, instead require TOEFL iBT 80+ or IELTS 6.0. Admission is decided on document review and academic performance.

Domestic (mainland) students

Top ~1–2% provincial (est.)

Domestic undergraduate admission is gaokao-based, so no acceptance rate is published. As a Project 985/Double First-Class university, XMU admits high-scoring students, with provincial score/ranking cut-offs set annually per province and major, generally requiring gaokao scores well above the first-tier (benke) line and top-percentile provincial rankings.

Language of instruction

Chinese-taught programs English-taught degrees

Alongside Chinese-taught degrees, Xiamen University runs a dedicated English-Medium Bachelor's admissions track offering full English-taught undergraduate degrees to international students; applicants submit TOEFL iBT 80+ or IELTS Academic 6.0+ (native speakers exempt).

How admission works

International undergraduate applicants apply via the XMU Online Application System (http://application.xmu.edu.cn), pay a CNY 400 fee, and submit notarized transcripts, HSK certificates, and passport copies; CSCA test results are required from 2026 onwards as mandated by China's MOE framework.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and admission is notified starting mid-year.

Frequently asked

How do I apply?

Most Chinese universities take applications through their own international admissions portal. Open the official website below to see the current steps, required documents and deadlines, then start your file with us and we will guide you through it.

What does it cost?

Tuition, housing and living costs vary by program and city. Where we have a figure confirmed from the official site, it is shown above, otherwise it is marked to verify. Always confirm the current amount on the official site before you budget.

Is it a reach for me?

Admission depends on your grades, your Chinese or English level and the specific program. We can look at your profile together and suggest a realistic list, this university included, rather than guessing.
