Admission & selectivity

International applicants

~20–35% (est.)

Tongji does not publish an acceptance rate for international applicants. Admission is materials-based: non-Chinese passport holders aged 18-25 submit high-school graduation certificate and academic transcripts (notarized Chinese/English translations if needed), plus a language certificate.

Chinese-taught undergraduate programs require HSK (generally HSK 3, score 180+; Architecture/Management & Economics/Medicine require HSK 4, score 200+; Liberal Arts HSK 5).

English-taught programs instead require proof of English via IELTS or TOEFL. Some programs may involve a placement/entrance test or interview.

Domestic (mainland) students

Top ~0.5–1% provincial (est.)

Domestic undergraduate admission is gaokao-based, so no acceptance rate is published. As a Project 985/Double First-Class university, Tongji admits near the top tier: provincial score/ranking cut-offs vary by province and major but typically require scores in the top fraction of test-takers (commonly first-tier/benke line plus a large margin).

Cut-offs are set annually per province and major during centralized gaokao enrollment.

Language of instruction

Chinese-taught programs English-taught degrees

Most undergraduate degrees are Chinese-taught, but Tongji offers full English-taught bachelor programs including the six-year MBBS (medicine), Civil Engineering and an Architecture International Class; English-taught applicants need IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 85.

Admission is merit-based with no published acceptance rate.

Frequently asked

How do I apply?

Most Chinese universities take applications through their own international admissions portal. Open the official website below to see the current steps, required documents and deadlines, then start your file with us and we will guide you through it.

What does it cost?

Tuition, housing and living costs vary by program and city. Where we have a figure confirmed from the official site, it is shown above, otherwise it is marked to verify. Always confirm the current amount on the official site before you budget.

Is it a reach for me?

Admission depends on your grades, your Chinese or English level and the specific program. We can look at your profile together and suggest a realistic list, this university included, rather than guessing.
