Admission & selectivity

International applicants

~15–30% (est.)

Shanghai Jiao Tong University does not publish an international acceptance rate. Admission for international (foreign-passport) undergraduates is materials-based document review (some tracks without a written exam).

Applicants submit passport, high-school diploma and transcripts, and language proof. Chinese-taught programs require HSK Level 5 (200+, writing >=60) or HSK 6 (180+, writing >=60).

English-taught programs (e.g. the 6-year English-medium MBBS / Clinical Medicine) require no HSK but require TOEFL iBT ~90+ or IELTS 6.0+ for non-native English speakers.

Domestic (mainland) students

Top ~0.2–0.4% provincial (est.)

Domestic mainland undergraduate admission is via the gaokao; no acceptance rate is published. SJTU is a top C9 university, admitting only students in roughly the top fraction of a percent of gaokao takers per province, with annual provincial score/ranking cut-offs near the very top of each province.

Language of instruction

Chinese-taught programs English-taught degrees

Most undergraduate degrees are Chinese-taught, but SJTU offers an English-taught Undergraduate Engineering Cluster at its Global College (mechanical, electrical/computer, materials) plus the English-medium MBBS; cluster students still take Chinese and must reach HSK 4 to graduate, and English-taught applicants need TOEFL/IELTS.

These figures are for international undergraduateadmission. Master’s and PhD requirements, funding and deadlines differ, see the official site (graduate programs are often more English-taught and better funded).

How admission works

SJTU offers two undergraduate admission rounds; Regular Round applicants sit an online entrance exam (21-22 March 2026) plus an interview. All SJTU graduates must also attain HSK Level 4 as a graduation requirement regardless of programme language.

The English-taught Global College (gc.sjtu.edu.cn) is a separate track with tuition of CNY 120,000/year and uses SAT/ACT/IB scores.

Frequently asked

How do I apply?

Most Chinese universities take applications through their own international admissions portal. Open the official website below to see the current steps, required documents and deadlines, then start your file with us and we will guide you through it.

What does it cost?

Tuition, housing and living costs vary by program and city. Where we have a figure confirmed from the official site, it is shown above, otherwise it is marked to verify. Always confirm the current amount on the official site before you budget.

Is it a reach for me?

Admission depends on your grades, your Chinese or English level and the specific program. We can look at your profile together and suggest a realistic list, this university included, rather than guessing.
