Admission & selectivity
International applicants
~20–35% (est.)Nanjing University does not publish an international acceptance rate. International undergraduate admission is materials-based: applicants submit a passport, high-school diploma and transcripts, language certificates, and supporting documents.
Because all undergraduate majors are taught in Chinese, applicants must submit an HSK certificate with at least HSK Level 5 (180+); the English major additionally requires IELTS 5.5+ or TOEFL 70+.
From the 2026/2027 academic year, applicants must also take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) and submit the test report.
Domestic (mainland) students
Top ~0.3–0.5% provincial (est.)Domestic undergraduate admission is gaokao-based; no acceptance rate is published. As a top C9 League university, NJU sits among the most selective in China, typically requiring a provincial ranking near the top fraction of a percent of gaokao test-takers, with exact score/ranking cut-offs varying by province, major and year.
Language of instruction
All undergraduate majors are taught in Chinese and require strong Chinese proficiency (HSK Level 5 with 180+). English-taught offerings exist mainly at the graduate level.
No full English-taught undergraduate degree is offered; the English-language major itself requires IELTS 5.5+ / TOEFL 70+ but is a language-study program, not an English-medium degree across disciplines.
