Admission & selectivity
International applicants
~25–40% (est.)HUST does not publish an acceptance rate for international students. Admission is materials-based: applicants submit passport, high-school diploma and transcripts (notarized Chinese/English translation if needed), and a language certificate.
Chinese-taught programs require HSK (e.g. HSK 5 score 180+ for Medicine, higher for programs at Tongji/Union Hospitals; other disciplines vary). English-taught programs, notably the 6-year English-medium MBBS at Tongji Medical College, require English proficiency and academic prerequisites (e.g. strong Physics/Chemistry/Biology grades; NEET qualification for Indian applicants).
Some programs use an interview or entrance assessment.
Domestic (mainland) students
Top ~0.5–1% provincial (est.)Domestic undergraduate admission is gaokao-based, so no acceptance rate is published. As a Project 985/Double First-Class university, HUST admits high-scoring students: provincial score/ranking cut-offs vary by province and major but generally sit well above the first-tier (benke) line, typically requiring top-percentile gaokao performance.
Cut-offs are fixed each year per province and major in centralized enrollment.
Language of instruction
Most undergraduate degrees are Chinese-taught, but HUST's official international-student office confirms English-taught bachelor programmes: the MBBS (Clinical Medicine) at Tongji Medical College, plus Pharmacy, Telecommunication Engineering, Mechanical Design Manufacturing & Automation, and Biomedical Engineering.

These figures are for international undergraduateadmission. Master’s and PhD requirements, funding and deadlines differ, see the official site (graduate programs are often more English-taught and better funded).

How admission works
International undergraduates apply online at admission.hust.edu.cn. After submitting academic documents, passing the interview (required by some schools), and receiving pre-admission, students upload non-academic documents. Admission notices and JW202 forms expected in June 2026.
Frequently asked
How do I apply?
Most Chinese universities take applications through their own international admissions portal. Open the official website below to see the current steps, required documents and deadlines, then start your file with us and we will guide you through it.
What does it cost?
Tuition, housing and living costs vary by program and city. Where we have a figure confirmed from the official site, it is shown above, otherwise it is marked to verify. Always confirm the current amount on the official site before you budget.
Is it a reach for me?
Admission depends on your grades, your Chinese or English level and the specific program. We can look at your profile together and suggest a realistic list, this university included, rather than guessing.
