Getting in is one thing — but what's day-to-day life actually like? Here's an honest picture of studying and living in China as an international student.

Campus and dorms

Most international students live in on-campus dorms, often in a dedicated international building. Campuses are large, self-contained worlds with canteens, shops, gyms and study spaces — you rarely need to leave for the essentials.

Your phone runs everything

WeChat and Alipay aren't optional — they handle payments, transport, food delivery, class groups and daily admin. Set them up early. Cash is genuinely rare.

A VPN, a local bank card, and a data plan are the other first-week essentials.

Food, friends and getting around

Canteen food is cheap, fast and surprisingly varied. High-speed rail makes weekend travel easy and affordable. Making friends is easier if you join clubs, language-exchange groups or your programme's activities early — a little Mandarin goes a long way socially.

Requirements, dates and score bands vary by university and change year to year, and CSCA figures are estimates while the exam is new. Always confirm on each university’s official admissions page.
