You don't need to commit to a four-year degree to study in China. Non-degree Chinese language programs let you build your Mandarin (and your HSK) with far lighter entry requirements — a great route for a gap year, a summer, or a stepping stone before a degree.
BLCU — the specialist
Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU, 北京语言大学) is the one university in China dedicated to teaching Chinese to international students, directly under the Ministry of Education. Its language programs run year-round as 4-week, 5-week, 12-week and full-semester (term-long) courses, with dedicated 4–8 week options over the summer.
It's not just BLCU
Most major universities — Tsinghua, Fudan, Zhejiang, Nanjing and many others — run their own Chinese-language and preparatory programs, often with a summer intensive. If you already have a target degree university, studying its language program first is a natural on-ramp.
What to expect
Entry is easy: usually just a passport and a basic application — no HSK needed to start. Short courses are relatively inexpensive; a full semester is commonly in the low-to-mid five figures in RMB (confirm current fees on each school's site).
By the end of a semester or two you can realistically reach the HSK 4–5 level many Chinese-taught degrees require — turning a language program into a genuine pathway to a full degree.
